Biography
Cristian Boiardi trained at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, where he received a degree in painting in 2000. From there, his path led him to deal with the world of graphics and the web until, in 2012, he began a path of research and study of the 3D world, in which he transferred the sensitivities and skills acquired during his artistic training.
Since around 2019, he chose to fully immerse himself in that world and has been working as a 3D artist ever since, particularly in the world of Cultural Heritage enhancement, archaeological heritage, and other areas related to the consumer industry and augmented reality.
In 2020, he embarked on an ambitious project to research and reconstruct Piranesi’s most famous views of Rome: #Piranesi Reborn.
The project has attracted great interest from different sectors: community of 3d artists, prestigious national studios engaged in the enhancement of archaeological heritage and actors present in the contemporary and digital art market.
In 2021, he was selected by the Ministry of Culture to be part of a pool of 3D artists and creative companies to realize the innovative e-archaeological project.
For two years in a row (2021 – 2022), he took the podium of the Blender Awards in the category “Exterior Architecture” .
The Piranesi Reborn project was included as part of the prestigious exhibition “Rome, Piranesi, Basilico” held in Parma from April 1 to May 21, 2023, in which original works by Piranesi, Roman views photographed by the great photographer Basilico and 3D reconstructions were placed side by side.
The view “The Mausoleum of Cecilia Metella” (Piranesi Reborn project) was also selected to participate in the first international virtual exhibition on the island of Venice: “Viral Human. Public Art and the Metaverse.”
The Lego project
The idea is to transform the old LEGO Pirates sets, starting with the first series from 1989, into real landscapes using 3D modeling. The main goal is to keep the distinctive and iconic features of each set intact, yet ensure photorealistic rendering. This point is critical to respecting the uniqueness and original spirit of each set.
For modeling I use Blender, while for textures I rely on Substance 3D Painter.
Along with my technical modeling skills, I apply my artistic knowledge, such as the principles of shape theory and figure weights, as well as the rules for good framing.
The combination of technical and artistic expertise enables the creation of reconstructions that are not only faithful to the originals, but also manage to capture the essence and magic of the LEGO Pirates sets.
